Sermon: Arise and Shine By Pastor Joseph Ondu

Arise and Shine

It’s time to move from surviving to thriving, from standing to shining. God is calling us to display His light in a world that desperately needs it.

Isaiah 60:1-4 is a powerful call for God's people to rise up and reflect His glory. The passage begins with:

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you” (Isaiah 60:1).

In this, God is calling us not only to arise meaning to get up, stand firm, and step into our purpose but also to shine. To shine means to allow the light of God, His glory and goodness, to be visible in our lives and to the world around us.

Many of us have experienced moments in life where we have had to rise up from difficult situations, challenges, or trials.  we have overcome obstacles and found our footing. But God wants more than just for us to stand. Now is the time for us to shine to let His presence within us be reflected outward, bringing hope, light, and transformation to those around us.

Verses 2-3 explain that although there is darkness covering the earth, God’s glory is rising upon His people. This means that even when the world feels heavy and dark, we are called to be the light because God’s presence is with us. We are not just meant to survive; we are meant to shine and be an example of God’s grace, love, and power.

Verse 4 speaks about nations and people being drawn to that light. When we rise and shine, others will be attracted to the God in us. Our lives will become a testimony that draws others toward Him.

So, this passage encourages us to take the next step beyond simply rising after adversity. It’s time to move from surviving to thriving, from standing to shining. God is calling us to display His light in a world that desperately needs it.

A practical approach to Isaiah 60:1-4 involves applying the concepts of arising and shining in our daily lives, paired with positive thinking. Here's how we can do that:

1. Embrace Your Identity and Purpose

Practical Approach: Understand that you are created for a purpose, and that God's glory is within you. Arise from any self-doubt or feelings of inadequacy and acknowledge that God has given you the strength to stand tall. Identify areas in your life where you may have been passive or hesitant and choose to step forward confidently.

Positive Thinking: Replace thoughts of "I’m not good enough" with affirmations like "I am equipped by God to shine" and "God’s light is within me." Start each day by reminding yourself that you are a reflection of God’s glory.

2. Be a Light in Darkness

Practical Approach: In your workplace, family, or community, choose to be a positive influence. Whether through kindness, wisdom, or encouragement, allow your actions and words to shine in ways that uplift others. Identify areas where you can bring solutions, hope, or positivity where there is negativity or despair.

Positive Thinking: When faced with challenges, think, "I can make a difference here" or "I carry the light of God, so I can overcome this darkness." This mentality shifts your focus from the problem to the impact you can make through God's strength.

3. Look for Opportunities to Shine

Practical Approach: Beyond just standing firm, look for ways to actively shine. Volunteer for new tasks, take initiative in your community, or help someone in need. Shining isn’t just about personal success; it’s about allowing God’s love and wisdom to flow through you to others.

Positive Thinking: Train your mind to see opportunities, not obstacles. Instead of thinking "Why is this happening to me?" reframe it as "How can I shine through this situation?" Positive thinking enables you to approach every circumstance with a mindset of growth and possibility.

4. Stay Focused on God's Glory, Not the Darkness

  • Practical Approach: Don’t dwell on the negativity around you. Instead, focus on how God is moving and how His glory is at work in your life. This might mean limiting exposure to negative news or conversations and intentionally filling your mind with things that uplift your spirit.
  • Positive Thinking: When things seem difficult, remind yourself that even though darkness surrounds you, God's light is upon you. Positive affirmations like, "God’s glory is greater than any challenge" can help you maintain a bright outlook despite external circumstances.

5. Draw Others to the Light

  • Practical Approach: As you rise and shine, people will naturally be drawn to you. Use this influence to point them toward God. Share your testimony, encourage others, and be intentional about living a life that reflects God’s goodness.
  • Positive Thinking: Instead of thinking "I can’t make a big difference," adopt the belief that "I am a light, and my life can inspire and impact others." Believing that you are a beacon of hope encourages you to live with greater purpose and intention.

Prayer Declaration - Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your light and glory that shines upon me. Today, I declare that I will arise in every area of my life where I have felt weak, discouraged, or unsure. By Your grace, I stand firm in the purpose and calling You have placed on my life.

I declare that I will not only arise but also shine, allowing Your light to flow through me. I reject fear, doubt, and any sense of inadequacy. Instead, I embrace Your strength, Your wisdom, and Your power that equips me to make a difference. I believe that Your glory is upon me, and I am a reflection of Your goodness in this world.

Though darkness may surround me, I choose to focus on Your light. I will be a beacon of hope, peace, and love to those around me. I declare that I will shine in my home, in my workplace, and in my community. As I walk in Your light, I trust that others will be drawn to You through my life.

Father, I believe that Your plans for me are good and that I am called to thrive, not just survive. I declare that I am equipped to overcome every challenge and to shine even in the midst of adversity.

Thank You, Lord, for Your faithfulness. I arise today, and I will shine for Your glory. Let Your light be seen in all I do. In Jesus’ name,
